Stage lighting can be used for various different reasons and not just to light up the stage in the dark. Lighting can illuminate the stage, but it can also highlight different areas (think guitar solo). It can set the scene and control the mood, think soft lighting for a ballad or vibrant colours for a more upbeat set.
There are several different types of lights we use for stages that can achieve these effects and here is a mini guide to help you plan your lighting.
A basic form of light that is normally uncontrolled and spreads white light across a large area.
These can be as basic has having a white light with a focused spread of light, to an LED light with multiple colours in a beam of light.
These come in two backing types, Wash lights and beam or profile lights. The wash lights are very much like a moving parcan, with the beam/profile lights having a much more focused, narrower beam, and have the ability to project shapes and images. With both types we have control over the movements and positions of the light beams.
These are a form of floodlight used to face back towards the audience to enhance parts of a performance.
Stage lighting isn’t just for evening shows either, you can really enhance the show by having some daytime lighting as well.
